VOLUME 83 / NUMBER 52 West Texas Treasure Fifty years ago, Billy Klapper quit working as a cowboy and became a full-time craftsman. He was awarded " 1998 Spurmaker of the Year " by the Academy of Western Artist.'s a pair by one of, if not the most sought after Texas makers in one of his most popular patterns that you can wear or add to your collection. Klapper uses Model T axles and the same method to craft his spurs. He was known for his one-piece spurs in which the heel band and shank were formed from a single piece of metal, as opposed to two pieces welded together.
Klapper is one of only two makers to be listed in both " Bits & Spurs in the Texas Tradition " and " Bits & Spurs Techniques, Motifs and Modern Makers " by Ned and Jody Martin as well as appearing in numerous other books and magazine articles. Bayers was a custom bit and spurmaker from Gilliland, Texas, from the 1930s until the ‘70s. Billy Klapper had them in his hands less than two weeks ago.
